ABOUT US

Welcome to Oldway Heights – A specialist care home for adults (18-65) with physical disabilities and mental health conditions.

We pride ourselves in providing a safe and enriching home environment, delivering care on an individual basis, to ensure every resident lives the life they choose with support and compassion.

Many of our staff have been here for a long time and feel that Oldway Heights is an extension of their own family – often giving up their own time voluntarily to help with social events.

We’ve won a number of awards, including Employer of the year award, and Care home worker of the year award at the British Care Awards.

OUR STORY

Oldway Heights was originally taken on by Barry Privett who realised the need for younger adults to have a safe home environment when it was not possible for them to remain in their own homes.

Barry bought the care home, which was in desperate need of repair, and transformed it from a home for the elderly into one that could meet the needs of young adults with a variety of disabilities.

Over the last 30+ years, Barry and his family have been dedicated in making the home grow and thrive, adding extensions to accommodate 11 extra rooms and better facilities. Barry’s children grew up with the home, helping and doing lots of jobs as teenagers.

As Barry takes a step back towards retirement, his son Ben, who has grown up with the home, has taken on the responsibility of Oldway Heights and continues to develop the business. Ben brings with him a wealth of managerial experience from a corporate background, having moved away from the family business for some years to forge his own career experience and moving up the ranks to manage a large team across Europe, followed by starting his own successful business from scratch. This has given him the skills and knowledge to return to Oldway Heights as a Director and drive the business forward.

Since Ben has taken the helm, he’s continuing the work to keep improving Oldway Heights, listening carefully to feedback and modernising the home where he can. He’s introducing new facilities (including a new treatment room with space for hairdressing, beauty treatments and consultations and medical check-ups), updating the internal and external décor, and modernising the running of the home, making it paperless and using a care management software on tablets to ensure the best possible care and communication between staff.

Our management team, Angela and Jayne, are highly experienced and have both been with us for over 15 years. Having worked in every area of the home themselves over the years, they know Oldway Heights inside and out.
While modernising the home is important, our residents are still at the very core of everything we do at Oldway Heights. This is their home, and we strive to put their happiness and comfort first.

We’ve always made huge efforts to keep things fresh and interesting too, with activities and plans for our residents. In the past we’ve even had goats (Pearl and Dean) who residents could feed and take for walks around the garden. We’ve hired a beach hut at Preston Sands which was very popular too. And where we can, we help residents to flourish with their independence through their own interests and passions.

We have two vehicles to take our residents out on weekly trips and for day to day run arounds. We continue to take regular trips to Sandy Park to watch Exeter Chiefs play and we are planning a few more visits over the coming year. We’re working on lots of other plans for the future to keep things fresh and exciting at Oldway Heights – so do check out our blog regularly for news and to find out what we have been up to.
